"The interpretation of a weaving in social relations.
A social texture built with threads and their interlacements.
A message of rebirth from our hard times …”

ARTIST’S BIOGRAPHY An artist who has chosen natural and synthetic fibres to
express herself.
From the Fibre Art to a new Mixed Media: Gloria Campriani.
Gloria Campriani’s studio is situated in Certaldo,
where she was born and grew up, and where the textile enterprise
of her family is situated. This was the environment that
formed and guided her choice of utilizing yarn as one of
the principal mediums for her work. Being familiar with this
medium has smoothed the way for improving her artistic capacities.
A keen student of the different expressive techniques related
to specific artistic languages, she soon abandoned oils to
dedicate herself to other techniques, mainly working with
recycled materials. Further she attended courses at various
art academies, amongst which a painting course at the Accademia
di Belle Arti in Florence.
After a careful analysis based on a comparison of various
materials, she finally chose thread as the most suitable
material for her particular expressive style. Furthermore
her origins, linked to the textiles sector, brought her into
close contact with Textile Art or Fibre Art, from which she
has taken her inspiration, in the most modern meaning of
this word. She does not make use of any tools but her hands
in order to create her works.
Her artistic language includes three different techniques:
the first two, in chronological order, can be included under
the various techniques of Fibre Art that are self supporting
without the use of glue or adhesive. In this case, the artist
can be defined as a true weaver or artist weaver. The materials
used in her artworks are various, including cork, bark or
tree trunks that highlight a fundamental relationship with
Nature. In fact, the artist does not use other than her hands,
to create her interlacements. This natural element, imprisoned
in the canvas becomes the protagonist of the entire scene,
together with the thread that ties it and displays it. Sometimes,
the fibre is manipulated to obtain differing emotional characteristics.
The thread is not used as such and its use is only an excuse
to take it into consideration. The artist manipulates threads
only when the material does not respond to her needs. Even…a
Swallow’s Nest is made from Fibres and Clay, and From
the Textile Art to a new Mixed Media: Gloria Campriani are
educational videos which take inspiration from this concept.
In all her artworks, the artist uses acrylic colours and
stucco with which she links, fixes and shades. The absorption
capacities of the different fibres permit her to obtain different
thicknesses and new perspectives, matching her continuous
search for movement within her own work.
Her innovative and complex technique suits her – her
experience and skill – and is mainly based on the use
of threads and acrylic colours to express male and female
emotions. This new artistic language talks about the solitude
and the psychological unease of our day, about a well-balanced
relationship with nature for the survival of our planet,
about the social transformation and about the union (in the
sense of love) through the use of threads that join together,
intertwine, interlace and bind. A visual interpretation of
a weaving of social relationships. A social texture made
up of threads and their interlaced links. A spiritual message
that expresses a strong desire for a reawakening from contemporary
hard times.
Gloria Campriani has always collaborated with artists and
researchers, and experimented. A tenacious and extremely
dynamic character, at the same time severe and creative.
Her art exhibitions – personal and collective – videos,
artistic installations, performances, addresses on Fibre
Art and art teaching activity take place in town-halls, schools,
universities, art galleries and museums (Museo Marino Marini
di Pistoia, Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Reale di Pisa, Museo
Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze, and Museo Piaggio in Pontedera).
She promotes Fibre Art spreading the awareness of her new
artistic and pictorial language, through videos and debates,
in order to stimulate also new artistic experimentations.
